PIMA 722: Teaching Practicum

As the M.F.A. is a terminal degree, making graduates eligible to apply for university teaching positions, it is a responsibility of the program to provide preparation in this area. This course compliments the research work done in PIMA 721 (although the courses do not need to be taken in sequence), expanding the single paper and oral presentation model into syllabus and assignment design, lecture preparation, and an investigation of the intellectual relationship between faculty members and university students, among other topics.

This class is a PIMA M.F.A. requirement, but is not limited to the PIMA cohort. It will have a strict maximum enrollment of 15, and PIMA M.F.A. students will have first priority; but graduate students from the Arts are welcome to enroll (with instructor’s permission).

Course Outline
Students will learn the fundamental principles and skills of university teaching, and apply them in practical classroom exercises. Students will prepare syllabi, course schedules, outcomes assessment statements, and assignments. Assignments given in sample classes will be completed, turned in, and evaluated by the rest of the class.

Students will prepare classes and courses on the history, theory, and critical issues of the contemporary collaborative performance media, including music, theater, dance, radio, performance art, and other forms. Readings, supporting media, bibliographies, internet resources, and other supplements will be prepared and presented.
