An integral part of the PIMA M.F.A., the ensemble will keep students working collaboratively in an ensemble mode more akin to that of musical collaboration. Collaboration in the 701-3 course series is more closely related to theatrical collaboration; so participation in the ensemble will expose students to both modes. The ensemble is required in the first year of the program, and is elective in the second year, so that students interested in this form of collaboration can continue, while those who do not find this form of collaboration relevant to their work can choose other electives in the second year of study. PIMA 732.1 and 732.2 are required in the first two semesters of enrollment in the Interactive Arts M.F.A. program.
Courses ending in .1 are offered in the fall semester, and those ending in .2 are offered in the spring semester.
Participation in, and contribution of new works to an ensemble consisting of artists from all performance media dedicated to creating, rehearsing, and performing short works by its members and by previous members of the ensemble, and developing a repertoire of experimental multimedia performance works which can be presented in sequence in a single performance event.
Each student will contribute at least one complete score or instruction set for a new work during the semester, complete with all equipment and personnel needs, and with any media and software required. The student will guide rehearsals of the work, refine the score/instruction set, and format it for permanent inclusion in the ensemble’s library. The ensemble will have at least one public performance per semester, arranged by the ensemble director (see PIMA 733.x), presenting a combination of new works and works from the ensemble’s repertoire.

PIMA 731.x is intended primarily for students not enrolled in the Interactive Arts M.F.A. program (such as Conservatory of Music students and Interactive Arts Advanced Certificate students), or students in the Interactive Arts M.F.A. program who have completed PIMA 722.1 and 722.2 and wish to continue participation in the ensemble without contributing new works.
