PIMA 711, 712, & 713: Independent Projects

These directed study courses are intended to serve students who wish to engage in independent projects related to the PIMA curriculum. Three credits of such study are required by the M.F.A. program. Appropriate topics include but are not limited to video design, video systems design, sound design, sound system design, software design, interface design, sensor building, sound editing, and music for video.

Also appropriate is study with a faculty member not part of the regular teaching core of PIMA faculty (with the permission of the PIMA director and the chair of the participating faculty member’s department). Cases in which this might be appropriate include but are not limited to: research or production projects involving dance, acoustic instrumental music composition, psychoacoustics, physical acoustics, holography, scriptwriting, performance art, theatrical direction, 8/16/35mm film production, photography, architecture or sculpture.

It is in part though the independent project courses that the very diverse body of PIMA students will be assured appropriate instruction by a faculty member with expertise complimenting their interests.

PIMA 711 (1 credit): This course offers one credit for an independent project to be completed in approximately 5 weeks.

PIMA 712 (2 credits): This course offers two credits for an independent project to be completed in approximately 10 weeks.

PIMA 713 (3 credits): This course offers three credits for an independent project to be completed over the course of an entire semester.

Course Outline
Directed study. Appropriate topics include research projects, production projects which are small enough in scope to be non-collaborative, and aspects of larger collaborative projects which are pursued independently by a single student and will constitute an independent product for the purpose of the class.
